Gear selector Auto Trans Is there a light ?? 200 1980

Am trying to figure out if I have a light kaput in my gear selector, so that I cannot tell in the dark what gear I have selected, or did they just not put lights in the older ones??
Trans is fine, just cant figure out if I am still in Second (2) until I get to hiway speed. I go to work in the dark, and come home in the dark in the winter ( doesnt get light till 9am, and dark by 3 pm here in N. Alaska).
Rather than immediately tear it open, I wanted a bit of input, lazy too !!
