erratic, inconsistent idle 200 1989

My 89' 240dl has idled inconsistently for months now. It's really strange because one day it will be O.K. and then the next day it idles so low that it barely stays running. I have tried setting the idle many, many times but it will never stay consistent. If I set it up when it idles too low it will idle way high sometime later, and vice-versa. Does anyone have any ideas on how to correct this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.
