I cannot see trying to pinch a few pennies on some off brand ATF product, then pissing around under the car changing it a few qts at a time. The benefits of synthetic oil and ATF on our bricks and cars in general has been well established and is recommended by Volvo.

My routine:
Change oil and filter every 10K using Mobil 1 synthetic. I take oil and filter to local service garage and watch them do it. Cost $15. Time 20 minutes

Flush With synthetic Mobil ATF every 50K or so. Time less than an hour.

I never have to crawl under the car or put it up on stands. My time is more valuable to me than that.

Several years ago I had a 740 with hard shifting 1st to 2nd and intermittent OD problems. After trying numerous corrections and adjustments (including fluid change) the ultimate cure was a flush with synthetic. The result was immediate and enough to convince me to stay with synthetic.
