760 Turbo 'whistles and whines' intermittently 700 1987

A vacuum problem? This baby was babied by her one and only owner, my Dad, who lovingly left the car to my teenage son before Dad returned to Europe with the military last year. Since, it's run great (thanks to that babying it's received for 18 years) - but has recently developed a whiny kind of whistle, occuring only intermittently and apparently influenced somewhat by the temperature outside, if not other factors unknown to me. It does not SEEM strongly associated with power (the turbo doesn't have to kick all the way in to hear it, and the power doesn't drop measurably), but my son reports "the engine doesn't feel as smooth either." I'm avoiding the panic that always comes with a car problem, and especially this car, to which I'm so attached. Anybody dealt with this before and have a good recommendation for us? We appreciate it!!!
