First, HAPPY NEW YEAR!
I hope everyone had a nice celebration and made it home OK.
My 544's glove box door won't open on its own. There appears to be a small coiled spring missing from the left hinge. To open the box door, I have to use both hands, getting a fingernail or two behind the chrome strip and pressing the release button at the same time.
I've been looking for a spring that will work for a few months. I've tried several (the closest was a throttle spring from an old carburetor) but nothing seems to fit and work at the same time.
I'm going to begin working on the glove box again soon - it currently consists of a cardboard pattern for a box. I never got around to transferring the pattern to the sheetmetal I bought to make a strong box from.
When the metal box is finished, it will be strong enough to mount the big radio to the outside bottom.
Also, is there supposed to be a switch on the glove box light? The light works, but only when the headlights are on. I'm going to wire it so it will come on when the glove box door is opened, ignoring the headlight circuit.
I'd appreciate getting a picture of the correct spring so I can make one up - so if you post a pic here or e-mail it to me, please put a ruler in the picture so I can determine the size if I'm going to make one.
I have plenty of material, but I just can't seem to visualize the part I need. *sigh*
Thanks!
Steve
