Iowa doesn't like me.-Electrical questions-mechanic 200

To start no offense intended, but it seems Iowa doesn't like me driving through, so, I'm starting to get a chip on my shoulder. I've made it through OR, ID, UT, WY, NE then ran into some problems once I entered the state.

The idle kicked up as I left the interstate right after crossing the Missouri River. I drained a little of the battery getting it started after the engine was essentially flooded by the high idle. But within the next 80 miles I noticed the Fuel and temp gauges were acting funny, and the (factory, but self-installed) Voltage meter wasn't showing any charge. I've checked the connections on the back of the Alternator. I also fiddled around to make sure the belt tension was good. But this didn't work and limped my way into Des Moines for New Year's. I charged the battery and made it to the Quad Cities. I'm almost out of Iowa, The Mississippi River is in view.

What I'm looking for is any advice regarding what to do/look for to remedy this problem--BTW I'm loosing charge and not getting a charge from the alternator the best that I can tell from the multi-meter. And if anyone knows of a reputable mechanic in this area, of the Quad Cities I'd appreciate that.

Thanks,

George
