Whining Noise - Help!

Hi there,
I recently bought a 1980 242 GT with a rebuilt engine, which I'm very pleased with. It needed some cosmetic work but the engine has been solid so far. The only nagging problem has been the whining type noise coming from under the middle part of the car. It doesn't affect the driving and the noise itself is constant, i.e. it doesn't change with the revs, speed, or gears. It's the same at idle as it is at 70mph. Any ideas what could this be? I'm not sure that whining is the right description, it's an unusual noise....
Thanks in advance! This board is awesome.
