ignition switch 'hot wired' no spark. 120-130

I think that the ignition switch on my '65 220 is broken. When I turn the key to the auxillary or on position everything works fine; lights come on, windshield wippers work, everything. When I turn the key to start it the lights stay on but the engine won't turn over. One of the previous owners installed a push button starter under the dash that has always been disconnected. To rule out the possibility that the starter is out I connected the wires again and sure enough the engine turns over, but I'm not getting spark. Is this a typical result of "hot wiring" the ignition on these cars? The wires look like they are all in good condition but I haven't thoroughly looked them over. Beyond loose wires, any ideas on what could be wrong here or suggestions on how to fix this. Thank you.
