Odd shifting issue... AW71 200

I'm well aware that the first step, before even posting here, is to try a flush when any transmission issues arise - but this tranny was just flushed about 5k ago when I swapped it in (originally from a '90 740t), and the fluid appears completely clean. Here's the thing: yesterday I wrestled the keys away from my girlfriend and took the '84 turbo out for a drive. I noticed that manually downshifting it does nothing except disengage the OD. Kickdown works fine, it will drop into 2nd when floored - but no amount of fiddling around with the shift lever will force a downshift. As I mentioned, pulling it back to '2' will disengage OD but it stays in 3rd. Aside from this it shifts beautifully, not even the characteristic hard shift from 1-2 (which makes me wonder if it may have been rebuilt, or at least had the valve body redone). Ideas, anyone?
