clogged heater core ? 140-160 1974

No, cores DON'T fail like that. Your thermostat might be stuck open though,
or like you say it could be clogged but if it is you should be able to tell
when you hooked up the hose to it.

Also if you are running without a thermostat it might short-circuit the heater
somewhat. A good thermostat is important in these because the system is not
designed to work right without it. Also bypasses some of the cooling passages
in the head without the thermostat.
