The electrical portion of the switch can fail without a "dead spot": the contacts arc over and just stop working. The good news is they are cheap and very easy to replace, as noted in the FAQ. Given the symptoms, you've got one of three problems:

-some big problems in your electrical panel under the radio
-a failing ignition switch electrical part
-a failing ground plane or connectors.
