strut bearing slop 900 1994

Hi all,
I have a clunky passenger side front end. The top of the strut moves about 1/4 inch when I jack the car as the weight comes off and on the tire. The top strut mount doesn't move and is tight to the chassis. I have checked the FAQ's and didn't see anything like this. I rep[laced the srut a year ago and the bearing looked great then. Would a bad bearing allow this much movement? The nut on top of the strut is as tight as I can get it without my impact, but as I understand it that's not necessary here. The ball joint is also new. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.
