Stutter/Hesitation/Loss of power 200 1990

My husband is out of town and away from any computers and our son is 250 miles from home on his way to Greensboro, NC. His 1990 240 is stuttering when he tries to apply additional throttle when going up hill. After initial stuttering a second incident resulted in an unresponsive throttle. The car did not stall, but he had to pull it off the road. When he shut the car off he said there was a slight smell of "firecrackers". It started up and ran normally but later stuttered again. Any ideas on the possible cause of the hesitation/stutter?
