Generic Problem....Volvo 'related' 140-160

Hi All,

I have a question here NOT concerning my Volvo. However, it concerns a 4 cylinder, internal combustion engine on my Mitsubishi (yeah I know, should have gotten that 240 as a daily beater).
During the past few weeks, i noticed that i need to top up a half a quart of oil every 1000 miles. I used to use full synthetic oil, but switched to dino oil recently to try cure the problem. Still no improvement. There are no leaks on the engine itself, no smoke from the exhaust, and no oily residue in the tailpipes. Will a valve job cure this or am I looking at new rings as well? Thanks guys.
