No Brake Lights 700 1990

I have a 1990 740 GLE. All lights worked until I replaced the tail light assemblys. I have cracked lenses and got the whole new assemblies from another car and figured it was just a plug in deal. I do not see that there is anything that can be wrong with the assembly as it seems like just metal connectors. Ever since I have not had any brake lights but the upper center one in the back window. Every so often I will have the "light out" bulb lit on the dash. When this happens the brake lights on the passenger side work. I have checked all the fuses, but do not know if it could be a relay, or which one it is. I am out of ideas. Any help would be greatly appreciated
