Radiator Leaking at Side Tank 900 1992

I finally tracked down the source of my nagging coolant leak today. It seems that the new Nissens radiator that I installed about two years ago is leaking on the passenger side where the plastic side tank is attached. With the car running, you can see the coolant streaming down the edge of the plastic tank along the tabs where it attaches to the radiator.

My question is: Not knowing much about the construction of a radiator, can anyone help me to understand what may have failed and how? I thought that the side tank functioned as the oil cooler for the transmission, and that the radiator was a separate component, each one sealed independently. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Thanks.
