Jar of buzzing bees + stumbling = Main fuel pump? 200 1988

Happy New Year Brickboard,

The Indobrick started playing up today:

Symptoms: buzzing bees under the back seat (a familiar refrain, The Gotenberg String Quartet) combined with intermittant and momentary stumbling, loss of power. Thankfully we made it home. (I love that about Volvos)

Usual Suspect: in-tank pre-pump died and was replaced over 18 months ago (symptoms then were noisy main pump - cured with new pre-pump) I had been drivin around with dying/dead pre-pump for some months; this could have shortened the life of the main pump?

Red Herrings: Car had sat for 2 weeks over holidays (battery is low on charge); fuel is low (I know, I know, not good practice); still haven't replaced dodgy indicator relay; very warm here in Sydney.

Does the stumbling accord with dying main pump? Can't recall reading that before. Sounds like I'm up for a new main pump.

Any advice greatly appreciated as always.

Thanks

Mike
