Using earlier strut housing in '95 960? 900 1995

I'm stymied by the Buick-like Volvo/Monroe front strut offerings for the '95 960, so please forgive if this is a stupid question, but: Can I bolt in a junkyard front strut from earlier 7/9 series such that I can install a quality damper? I can't imagine the upper stut bolts would be different, but maybe the knuckle?
