When's the last time you changed your fuel filter? S90-V90

I have a friend who drives a "non-volvo" 117,000 miles. His car died last week. Just before having it towed to the shop he decided to change the fuel filter, it was totally block. His mechanic made a comment " the fuel filter is the problem but, it usally takes the fuel pump with it". A couple days later my friend broke down again, fuel pump.

The lesson here, preventive maintence. I have 175 on my 965, as soon as it's above 40 here I'll be changing a fuel filter. Any hints on doing it would be appreciated.
