no start after engine work

just replaced the cylinder head with a used one (think the old one was warped)
but had trouble with timing belt. couldn't remove crankshaft pulley. so, although the camshaft and crankshaft were lined up on the money, I don't know for sure about the auxilary shaft. Is this critical? Why else won't it start?
Can smell gas ok, but seems like no spark. Should I pull a plug and look for spark arcing? What about that little black wire connector to the head(2 prongs inside)? maybe I got that on wrong. yikes!
