1995 960 Timing belt change intervals 900 1995

I have a 95, and its at 123k. i am getting conflicting reports about timing belt intervals. the drivers manual says 70k. the chilton's service manual says 50k, but apparently 96s have a 70k interval according to the manual.

I seem to remember 70k the first time, and then 50k every time after that. Does the difference between 95 and 96 intervals have to do with the belt alone, if so, wouldnt a newer belt (replaced at 71k) bring with it the wider intervals since it was installed later and with, presumably, new parts.

In short, do i need to change the timing belt? I've heard it is suicide to keep driving, especially in the 960, with a worn belt.
