Should I drain or flush tranny 700

Hi Guys:
I got this 90 740 GLE 16 valve last year in March with 152k miles
and I have now 168K. Looking at records from previous owner I can not find any
type of service on transmission. It's running fine, except for a sort of burned
plastic smell coming from under the car after u drive it for a while. I thought
it was some plastic bag that went into the exhaust system, but nothing... I took a look at tranny fluid and it looks dark. Maybe the smell comes from there?
Anyway I'm thinking of changing the fluid.Going thru 700/900 FAQ I found
that I can drain the system thru the plug or to flush it thru the upper cooling line. It seems like thru the drain process u only change 3 quarts of the fluid, but u can also clean/change filter/screen. On the other hand flushing it I can change all the fluid, but the filter/screen stays untouched. Should I do both or just one of them? If one, which should I do? Is it important to chnge the filter?
Tks
