Temperature Sender- Is it only for the gauge? Is there another port? 200 1990

Does the temperature sender under the intake manifold only send a signal to the gauge or does the ECU use the signal? I am putting in a water temp gauge and contrary to the advice of the guy at "egauges" you cannot sp;lit the signal from that wire for both the stock temp gauge and a real one so I was just going to unplug the stock gauge.

Is there another port that I could install a VDO sender in. I really rather not put one in the radiator hose. Thanks for your help.
