Rapping start up 444-544

When did this noise start? Has it been there since you got the car?

Was the engine quiet and got noisier as the miles went by or did the noise have a sudden onset?

Did anything happen just before the noise came? Oil change, new filter, major engine work, accident, your buddy drove the car, etc?

The car is running really well right now? Did it run poorly? What did you do to fix it?

Does it make any noise if you remove the plugs and turn it over cold?

Pull one plug (not the wire, the plug) at a time and observe.

Pull one wire at a time for a different trial.

Start it with the belts off to eliminate accessories. Um, don't run it too long like this.

As for an exhaust leak, have an assistant plug the tailpipe with a rag, gradully applying more pressure to the rag. Something will make noise or hiss.

Let us know what you find.
