I've got the same problem/noise with my 1998 V90 Wagon. I've only replaced bushings so far, but this in an annoying problem. Replacing the struts was my next move, but I'm rethinking that after reading your post. My indy shop and one of my local dealers has tried to find the problem with no luck so far.

I had a 1990 740 sedan that had the same issue. Replacing the sway bar bushing solved the problem.
