Rapping start up 444-544

The experiments with the plugs/wires are to turn the engine over or run it with different levels of stress on the moving parts.

No plugs = no stress from power strokes on any cylinders
One plug out = no stress on a given cylinder
One wire off = less stress than normal on a given cylinder

Was the pipe welded on the car or off the car? It sounds like you are on the right track.
