instument cluster - I tried, but fried 200 1988

Well, odometer went out, so I thought that I would replace the gear and do the temp. compensation board fix at the same time. Soldered a jumper wire to terminals 1 and 3, and reinstalled the unit (with the new gear) and went from the anticipation of triuphant success to the sober realization of abismal failure when nothing but the overdrive arrow worked! No temp, no gas guage, no speedo. Question--is this dead? and if so, any tips on getting a junk yard odometer to match my current milage, or should I just leave it. (I will be able to salvage my new gear at least.
P.S. I have taken it out and rechecked everything a couple times allready.
