knocking sound from engine 700 1991

It sounds as if you are holding a thin piece of stick on the spokes of a bicycle while it is turning ..Hot or cold it happens ..all grades of gas ..more pronounced while accelerating...seems to come from engine/trasmission intereface ..does not sound like typical Engine knock..Engine does not preignite when it is turned off...ignition timing is right on...Car drives very well..could be present at high speeds but sound is drowned by wind /engine noise.At stand still aggressively reving engine does not produce the sound..It seems engine has to be loaded...what could it be????
