Accessing heater's air intake

It's '89 240 with A/C

It's finding itself in the following state of desintegration:

Questions:
1) Is there any possibility to access the air intake (1) without disconnecting heater core and A/C plumbing (A/C plumbing is solid copper, not rubber)? Need to clean it from all the trash and am 99.9% sure heater core is OK.

2) How to disconnect those parts of vent's duct that are hanging on small rubber mushrooms (2) without cutting the last ones as I don't have any replacement.

Thanks in advance,
Maria
