fuel pump to filter hose question 200 1983

My fuel pump / fuel filter assembly has a piece of rubber hose that goes from the pump, makes a 90 degree turn then goes onto the fitting for the fuel filter.
This hose failed on me yesterday causing me to lose all 15 gallons of gas and have to walk 2 miles home. I fixed it this morning (with another piece of fuel hose) but wondered if there is is something missing. I think the hose failed due to the high pressure fuel hitting the bend in the hose. Is there supposed to be a 90 degree fitting on the nipple coming out of the fuel pump? It has threads on it; if so what size 90 do I need.
