speedometer 900 1995

volvo 960 1995
The speedometer stopped working, up arrow started flashing between w and s or w and e modes. This happened after I drove the car in s mode for about 10 minutes. The local volvo dealer suspected a faulty speed sensor and relpaced it. The problem still persists with the speedo working for about 10 minutes and then dying. The technician insists that there is a fault in the speedometer. This is going to be very expensive (about USD600). Will appreciate any solutions for this problem.
