Overdrive won't disengage shifting into 3rd 700 1987

I have just completed buying/rejuvenating a 1987 740 Turbo with M46/overdrive. When I shift into 3rd gear, the overdrive does not disengage. When I pulled the wires from the switch on the top of the tranny, the overdrive still works. I thought that the power for the solenoid goes through this switch which disengages the overdrive when you shift out of 4th. Am I correct? Does anyone know what is happening?

I have to manually disengage the overdrive with the switch on the knob which works fine. I'm just afraid that I will forget to do this and engage reverse. Goodby overdrive!

Thanks for any comments.
