M40 Repair Help Needed 140-160

I've owned (as primary transportation and/or race cars) over a dozen M40 or M41 equipped Volvo's. Until now, I've never had any of those gearboxes give me a moments trouble, so I've never even seen one disassembled, let alone attempted to take one apart. Well, I have one now that is telling me it needs help... specifically, the M40 in my 142E race car appears to *really* need the input shaft bearing replaced.

In looking at the green manual, I get the sense that this bearing removal and replacement requires what amounts to a gearbox teardown. True? Or is it possible to replace that bearing without pulling the gearbox apart?

Thanks in advance,
Gary L.
