Head gasket issue 444-544

Greetings all,
Last year when I bought my '65 Pv, the previous owner claimed the engine was a dealer high performance engine with a variety of upgrades including a 12:1 compression ratio. As the car ran fine on regular gas, I assumed he was mistaken. Now the head is off I am beginning to wonder. The old head gasket is .079 inches thick. The new gasket is .o31 inches. Could it be that some previous owner put in a thick gasket to reduce the compression and if so, does anyone know where to obtain a thick head gasket? These old cars can be a pain at times, but are a real joy at other times!
Thanks in advance for any help.
Chris
