timing driving me CRAZY 700

The timing on '89 - up Volvos (as far as I know) is set by the ECU and the crank sensor and is not adjustable. Whoever told you to disconnect the hose from the airfilter to the throttle body was wrong, disconnecting that hose causes an instant stall as you found out since all the air is bypassing the AMM. A good workshop manual is probably the best tool you will ever buy.
