Engine hesitates/dies on abrupt acceleration - why? 700 1999

Dear All,
This question must have arisen before, but I can't find it here. My Volvo 740 GLE (B230E normally aspirated injected engine) now hesitates or dies on abrupt acceleration. It works just fine if the acceleration is made smoothly. I have checked the plugs (all new 0.8mm gap - looking good) and the vacuum lines. It sounds to me like the fuel-air mix is wrong during a change in flow. Is it possible that there is a problem with the air flow plate. My limited understanding is that the throttle cable allows more air into the engine which in turn moves the air flow plate allowing more petrol into the injectors. (isn't that how the amount of petrol flowing into the injectors is controlled?)
Does anyone have any advice? The car has 230,000 miles on the clock, so may not be going much longer - but (Sod's Law) I have just given it a clean, and I hate abandoning a newly cleaned car!
