Transmission Oil 200

A couple of weeks ago I changed the oil in the tranny of my ’89 245 dl w/standard. I’ve had the car a little more than a year and I don’t know when it was changed last. I put in ATF 5 per some recommendations in the archives of the BB.
Now it seems to be stiffer when shifting, especially in first and reverse. I didn’t change or adjust anything else.
I’ve read, also on the BB, that some folks are using some sorts of synthetic blend of oil in the 240 transmissions.
Do you think synthetic oil will smooth out the shifting? Does anyone have specific recommendations?
Many thanks.
