Heater whistles - vacuum leak? 200 1988

I have an '88 240 that is making an odd noise; specifically, I've noticed that if I turn the heater on partway (i.e. the lever in the middle of the range) a whistling sound like that of a vacuum leak comes from the "Combined Unit." The sound is affected by how hard I press the accelerator; for example, if I coast the sound goes away, and if I accelerate the noise increases. If I move the lever to the left or right, the sound goes away even if I accelerate, but it returns after about 20-30 seconds. Has anyone experienced anything like this before? I don't even have any idea of where to start to troubleshoot this, so any tips anyone has is greatly appreciated
