starter replacemnet 760 700

Hello All, just picked up a 760 turbo wagon. Runs well, Went to start it the other day and it sounded like the solenoid was spinning but the starter wouldn't engage. Gave the starter a whack and it started. I purchased a new starter and replaced it. Now when I get in the car and insert the key, the interior/red(security?) lights blink on and off, the dash lights up but the car won't start. Starter won't engage at all. Even if i pull the key out, the interior lights keep flashing until I get out and then they stop. Any ideas? A friend(Volvo Enthusiast) of mine says that I probably got the wrong starter(something about turbo starters being different)-could this cause these symptoms? Thanks
