AW70 transmission w/ brown fluid 200

I have an '89 244 with what I assume is an AW70 automatic tranny. The car is very nice (80,000 miles and maintenance records . . . I knew the old lady who drove it). Only fly in the ointment is that the tranny fluid is brownish. I want to change the fluid (and screen while I'm at it) and see if the new fluid keeps its nice reddish color. I have two concerns:

1. How do I drain all of the fluid? What about the stuff in the converter and the cooling system? Otherwise the contaminated fluid will make the new stuff look brown.

2. If the fluid is brown, am I just clasping at straws? Is it definitely cooked? I know that any engine will darken the oil if you leave it long enough; are automatic transmissions like that or do they only turn the fluid brown when they are on their last legs.
