What's the deal with the jumpy fuel senders? 120-130

My old 1964 122 that I had in high school had a jumpy fuel gauge, where the needle used to whack against each side of the gauge at certain levels. It drove me nuts.

When I bought my 1963 122, I was so happy to see the gauge stable at full. But as it got to half-tank, it started to do the same thing. Then near empty, it stops frittering and acts normal.

So I ordered a used/tested fuel sender from Susqueanna Spares. When I installed it last week, it exhibits the same problems -- and worse. The needle hadn't got to the 'E' but I ran out of fuel. I was on the freeway in my shorts on the way to tennis, and it was 15 degrees here in Utah. Luckily, a nice lady saw my suffering and took me to a gas station after a short wait.

Is there any way to make these things work better? Are they fixable? They look so simple, but the jumping about is maddening.
