No center console lights 200 1986

Hi, in my favorite 240DL I have lights in my instrument cluster but no center console or shift indicator illumination lights. The bulb in the rear defrost switch illuminates, but the rest is dark, dark dark...After doing a search here, I checked/cleaned all the fuses and then tried a rheostat bypass, but no luck...is there anything else I should check before I pull the center console and start tracing/testing that mass of wires? It seems unlikely that all those bulbs would be bad...but I'll check those next...I don't really know how to read a wiring diagram so any hints are appreciated. Thanks
