Banging rear end 200 1988

Hello,

This is regarding a 1988 240 Wagon:

Going over certian bumps (like a dip or speed bump-like abnormality in the road where both wheels are going over the same shaped thing in the road), the rear end of the car makes quite a racket. The jarring can be felt through the floor board while I'm driving it. Sometimes, the rattling occurs a few moments after the car has actually cleared the bump in the road.

Having driven the car for several years, I can tell it's not the tailgate.

I've removed all unattached objects from the car, including the spare tire, tools, and all removable access panels, but the noise persists.

Is there a common location to look at to see if the exhaust pipe is hitting anything? When I grab and move the tailpipe with my hands, I can't re-create the noise. The muffler and pipe seem to be on there pretty good.

The car also has "progressive rate" springs in the rear, but I'm not sure if that has anything to do with the problem.

I was wondering how I can diagnose this problem further (i.e. while the car is standing still).
