Valve tap and enigne longevity S90-V90

My 98 V90 has an intermittent and elusive valve or lifter tap. I may not hear it for 3-4 weeks, then bingo....it starts again... almost always when the engine is hot. I've tried the AutoRx voodoo and am less then impressed. The previous owner had the same complaint I see in the service records. The Volvo dealers response was an oil change and Marvel Mystery Oil.
99% of the time this engine is as smooth as one could ever hope for but when that tick starts, you hear it.
My questions: How serious is an intermittent valve or lifter tap in the scheme of things? Does it effect the longevity of the engine?

This baby has 113K on it now and the PO had reported it from about 55K. It does not burn a drop of oil and seems to like Castrol 10-40 with a Mann filter the best so far.
