To upgrade cam or not? 200

Good evening, I'm contemplating swapping my stock cam w/the IPD Turbo cam and adj. cam gear, on my '83 242Ti. My mechanic strongly recommends not doing this due to the increased heat, high mileage of the vehicle and possible interference if the t-belt were to break. Not to mention he thought it would increase the likelihood of blowing the headgasket and intake manifold gasket. As if this should be enough to steer me away from modifying my mint daily driver, I would love the increase in power and the ability to advance the timing for a little more low-end torque. Please fellow bricksters, share your thoughts on the subject. I called iPD and they assure me the engine will not "suddenly" become an interference engine, and they have many satisfied customers who have testified to the trouble-free upgrade. Thanks for any advice and suggestions on possibly moving forward w/this upgrade as well as opening the exhaust. Thanks Brickboard!
