Driveline clunk clunk clunk clunk 200 1989

I'm stumped. It sounds like it's in the tunnel, like a bad u-joint but there is no play in the driveline, I cannot make it clunk when shifting from reverse to drive, nor can I get any noises out of it when I try and roll the car back and forth in park.

It happens at very low speed from 5 mph on, It's not so noticeable at freeway speeds but might just be drowned out by road and wind noise. It doesn't seem torque related, shifting to neutral and coasting makes no difference.

I did think about the transmission mount, and looked at it. It's not in the newest of shape but it's not broken. Motor mounts are a little saggy but not broken. It feels like there's a full inch of clearance between the front u-joint and the tunnel so it's hard to imagine how it could be hitting, though that's exactly what it sounds like.

Any ideas?
