A possible alternative replacement method 200 1989

If you can get the leaker out from the rear, you may not need to remove the valve cover (and rear bearing cap).

I replaced a popped-out plug (without touching the valve cover) by pushing the new one in from the rear. I pressed it in with a flat bar, using a wood block against the firewall as a levering fulcrum.

Then I secured it (just in case) with a DIY retainer strap as in the picture. The tapped holes are already in the head.

It's still OK after 30-40K miles or more.
