I had my SU's off the car last week to perform several tasks - cleaning up the intake manifold and fixing a bad jet adjustment spring among them.
When I removed them, I bumped up against the fuel feed lines that supply the jets from the bottom of the float bowl. Both hoses popped out of their fasteners at the float bowl end. I've had the carbs off and upside-down to fix this problem, but one hose just won't stay attached.
The hoses run through a collar nut at the float bowl, where they slip over a tiny tubular brass fitting. Once the hose is on the fitting, you must keep a good pressure on it while you tighten the collar nut.
One fitting was broken (tube fitting came out with the hose) so I replaced the entire float bowl with a spare I had on hand. I know the brass fittings can be removed and replaced, but the rubber seal got screwed up on the one that fell apart.
Does anyone know how to make these *%$^* hoses stay on? I'm almost tempted to use a fuel-proof adhesive. (As opposed to a fool-proof adhesive!)
I am worried about these little feed lines coming loose on the road, dumping gasoline on a hot exhaust manifold. Even if I don't get a fire, I'd be stuck until I could remove that carb and fix the hose again.
This is not a pleasant situation to be in!
