electrical meltdown 700 1990

Hi all. I've got a 740 GLE estate whose dash has been playing up for many months now. The regular stuff: fuel guage doesn't work; speedo and odometer doesn't work consistently, etc...

In any case, last night, all the warning lights went on suddenly, but only dimly. They are still on, but I have been able to drive the car around town all day today.

The thing is, just as I pulled into my drive tonight, the stereo went off, the tach needle dropped to 0, and the lights went dimmer. The car, however, was still running strongly.

Does this sound like just a dash electrical problem, or is something more serious happening?

I'll look forward to some comforting words, and thank you in advance.
