561 ECU swap? 200

We have a '90 244 with working ECU. I know it's not a 561 ECU, but I can't recall the # and want to ask this anyway.

Can I swap the ECU from the '90 into our '89? Will both run OK? I've seen posts claiming improved fuel economy and even improved performance after swapping in later-version ECUs.

I drive my '89 245 with 561 ECU a lot - about 900 miles/week or so. The '90 sees a lot less use, just around town. So if I can improve the '89 by swapping in a better ECU that would be good, as long as the '90 stays running OK.
